چکیده

Wireless communications exploits the electromagneticmedium, which is intrinsically polarization-sensitive. Much wireless technology, however, has been devised without explicit consideration of polarization. Past decades of wireless technology has mainly exploited the dimensions of time, frequency and space. As such, polarization is a logical next step in this progression. This special issue focuses on cutting-edge novel exploitation of polarization for wireless communication applications and the assessment of performance gain when using polarization sensitive devices as compared to standard hardware. After a rigorous peer review process, we present the following six papers for the Issue. The first paper, entitled ‘‘The effect of polarization separation on the performance of Candecomp/Parafac-based vector sensor array processing ’’ [1] assesses the importance of polarization diversitywhen separating two closely-located sources using a vector-sensor array. A novel polarization separation measure, for spatially non-collocated sources, is provided along with geometrical interpretation. A multilinear data acquisition scheme is used for illustration because of its interesting identifiability properties. In the secondpaper ‘‘Study of the asymptotic Cramér–Rao Bound for the COLD uniform linear array’’ [2], the authors study another polarization sensitive array configuration known as the Cocentered Orthogonal Loop and Dipole pairs Uniform Linear Array (COLD-ULA). Closed-form expressions of the deterministic Cramér–Rao Bound (CRB) for the direction and polarization parameters are derived under the assumption that the number of sensors is sufficiently large. The authors show that in practice, the closed-form expression is a good approximation to the CRB even if the number of sensors is moderate (about ten) in the case when the sources are not too spatially close. Using this closed-form CRB, several interesting results on the performance of the COLD array are derived. The next paper, ‘‘Tri-polarized MIMO systems in realworld channels: Channel investigation and performance analysis’’ [3], studies the benefit of tri-polarized MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) systems over their dual-polarized counterparts. It is shown, starting from the polarization mechanisms in wireless propagation channels, that dual-polarized MIMO systems possess high

Polarization division multiple access with polarization modulation for LOS wireless communications

In this paper, we discuss a potential multiple access and modulation scheme based on polarized states (PS) of electromagnetic (EM) waves for line-of-sight (LOS) communications. The proposed scheme is theoretic different from the existing polar modulation for EDGE and WCDMA systems. We propose the detailed bit representation (modulation) and multiple access scheme using PS. Because of the inflex...

Indoor Non-directed Optical Wireless Communications - Optimization of the Lambertian Order

For an indoor non-directed line of sight optical wireless communication (NLOS-OWC) system we investigate the optimized Lambertian order (OLO) of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). We firstly derive an expression for the OLO from a conventional Lambertian LED model. Then, we analyze the indoor multi-cell NLOS-OWC channel characteristics including the optical power distribution and the multipath time ...

Polarization Sensitive Array Based Physical-Layer Security

In this paper we propose a comprehensive framework exploiting the polarization sensitive array (PLA) to improve the physical layer security of wireless communications. More specifically, the polarization difference among signals are utilized to improve the secrecy rate of wireless communications, especially when these signals are spatially indistinguishable. We firstly investigate the PLA based...

A Novel Small E–Ring Shaped Monopole Antenna with Dual Band-Notch Function for UWB Wireless Communications

This paper presents an E-ring shaped printed monopole antenna for UWB applications with dual notched bands performance. In order to generate single frequency band notch function, we applied a U-ring shaped monopole antenna, and by inserting a rectangular ring in the centre of it an E-ring shaped radiating patch created and a dual band-notch function can be achieved. The measured bandwidth of th...

Measurement of Wet Antenna Losses on 26 GHz Terrestrial Microwave Link in Malaysia

This letter discusses the effect of antenna losses due to rain on a 26GHz microwave link and the technique of extracting the losses from the measured rain attenuation. A 2-feet parabolic dish antenna with horizontal polarization has been used in the study. The measurement results have been compared with those obtained from other locations in Malaysia and some other Published Research works. The...
